When to go
May and late September are the best value for weather-to-crowd ratio nationwide. August is genuinely difficult — many Italians themselves are on vacation, and cities like Florence and Venice hit peak heat and peak crowds simultaneously.

Before you go
Cards are widely accepted in cities; smaller trattorias and rural areas sometimes prefer cash. A cover charge (coperto) is standard and not a scam — it's on the menu.
No special vaccinations required. Emergency number: 112. Pharmacies (green cross) are reliable for minor issues.
eSIMs work well; TIM, Vodafone, and WindTre cover the country thoroughly.
Comfortable, sturdy shoes are non-negotiable — cobblestones are everywhere from Rome to the Cinque Terre trails.
Getting around
The Trenitalia/Italo high-speed network connects Rome–Florence–Venice–Milan efficiently, often under 3 hours between any pair. Regional trains to smaller towns are slower but reliable.
Essential for Tuscany's countryside; avoid it in historic centers — most (Rome, Florence, Venice center) have restricted-traffic zones (ZTL) that fine rental cars automatically.
Culture & etiquette
Cappuccino is a morning-only drink by local convention — ordering one after 11am marks you as a tourist, harmlessly but noticeably. Meals are unhurried; the check isn't brought until asked for.
